He was traded midseason to the White Sox and struggled toward the end of his career, hitting a career low .258 that year. Alomar is doused with champagne by his Blue Jay teammates while he was being interviewed after a World Series clinching victory versus the Atlanta Braves in 1992. It was Alomar's first World Series win, and he played a significant role in getting Toronto there. He was the ALCS MVP thanks in large part to a Game 4, game-tying two-run home run in the ninth inning off Oakland Athletic closer Dennis Eckersley, which led to a pivotal Blue Jays win. On March 31, 2011, Alomar was named as a special assistant to the Blue Jays organization. The following year, he began hosting the annual Tournament 12 showcase at Rogers Centre for Canadian baseball prospects; major leaguers Josh Naylor, Mike Soroka, and Abraham Toro are alumni of the tournament.
He was in a relationship with professional tennis player Meghann Shaughnessy from 2004 to 2006, who claimed Alomar exposed her to HIV. The lawyer of Alomar's ex-wife stated Alomar paid $4 million in settlements to Shaughnessy and Ilya Dall, another ex-girlfriend. On November 12, 2013, Alomar launched a baseball equipment line, Alomar Baseball. On April 4, 2008, Alomar was inducted into the Blue Jays Level of Excellence at Rogers Centre, prior to the team's home opener.
Roberto Alomar Bio
Once they got there, they were rolled by the A’s in five games in the ALCS, with Eckersley and future Jays Dave Stewart and Rickey Henderson establishing themselves firmly as Toronto’s nemeses. Oakland went on to sweep the San Francisco Giants in the earthquake-interrupted World Series. There were subsequent years when that team should have broken through, especially 1987, George Bell’s MVP season, which brought the epic collapse to the Tigers in the final week of the season. That one hurt, and that one even more firmly established the knee-jerk sentiment that the Jays just couldn’t win when it counted. To put it lightly, Alomar’s home run turned the game around, tying the score at 6-6 and setting the stage for not only an American League pennant win, but the 1992 World Series title.
Alomar spent three seasons in his prime as a member of the Baltimore Orioles. He was elected to three All-Star games, won two gold gloves and was awarded a silver slugger. But Alomar might best be remembered for spitting on umpire John Hirschbeck. In this photo, Alomar is held back by manager Davey Johnson after getting ejected from the game over a called third strike.

After signing a one-year-deal with Tampa, Alomar awaits a ground ball in a Spring Training game in St. Petersburg, Fla., in 2005. However, after a preseason plagued with injuries, he retired on March 19. Alomar hacks at a pitch against the Cleveland Indians during a 2004 game at U.S.
Ultimately, he and Hirschbeck made peace and the baseball world forgave Alomar — writers electing him to the Hall of Fame, with the umpire’s approval, in 2011. Eckersley came on in the eighth with two on, a run across and nobody out. He gave up two more runs on consecutive singles to make make it 6–4, but eventually struck out Ed Sprague to end the inning. In 1985, the first year the Jays made the playoffs, they led the Kansas City Royals three games to one in the first-ever best-of-seven ALCS. Had it been the old best-of-five format , that magnificent Jays’ team, just eight years removed from expansion, would have moved on to face the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series. “At that time I was swinging the bat real well, I believe I had two or three hits before the home run,” said Alomar, whose Blue Jays faced Eckersley’s Athletics for the AL pennant that fall.
Career Regular Season
Toronto’s starter, Jack Morris, brought in as a free agent to win games just like this one, had surrendered five runs in a little over three innings of work. Alomar shares a moment with his brother Sandy before the 1992 All-Star game in San Diego. The Alomar brothers would spend six All-Star games together and four regular seasons playing on the same team. On April 30, 2021, Alomar was fired from both the Blue Jays and MLB amid reports that MLB was investigating claims that a female Blue Jays staffer claimed that Alomar had sexually harassed her in 2014. According to The Sports Network, the staffer was preparing to sue Alomar, the Blue Jays, and MLB. Later on April 30, Manfred announced that following an investigation into those allegations that had taken several months, Alomar had been placed on MLB's ineligible list and banned from baseball.
Alomar signed with the Orioles after the 1995 season, led the team to two ALCS appearances, and won the 1998 All-Star Game MVP Award in his final year with the team. He then joined the Indians for three seasons and had the most productive years of his career in 1999 and 2001, again leading his team to the playoffs and becoming an AL MVP Award finalist both years. Alomar spent the final years of his career with the Mets, White Sox, and Diamondbacks before retiring at spring training in 2005. Began the season with Las Vegas of the Pacific Coast League...Played in only nine games before being recalled by the Padres. Gained his first major league hit off Nolan Ryan in his first big league at-bat on April 22nd.
Now, Toronto sports fans must acknowledge that the Dave Keon of the Blue Jays is no longer a part of the team. Time and healing will determine if it’s the proper decision by the club… or if reinstatement becomes an option. The sexual misconduct allegation represents Alomar’s second bout of infamy. As a member of the Baltimore Orioles, while facing the Blue Jays at SkyDome on Sep. 27, 1996, Alomar argued a called third strike with John Hirschbeck and then spit in the umpire’s face.
On September 27, 1996, during a game against the Blue Jays, Alomar got into a heated argument over a called third strike with umpire John Hirschbeck and spat in his face. He defended himself by saying Hirschbeck had uttered a racial slur and that Hirschbeck had been bitter since one son had died of ALD and another had been recently diagnosed as well. Upon hearing of Alomar's comments, Hirschbeck had to be physically restrained from confronting Alomar in the players' locker room. In 2021, Alomar was banned from baseball by MLB following an independent investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct, dating back to 2014. In April 2021, the Blue Jays also announced that Alomar would be removed from the Level of Excellence and his retired number banner would be taken down at Rogers Centre.
Batting left handed, his swing was sweet and decisive and everyone knew it was gone the second he made contact — knew it was out of the ballpark even before he raised his fists in celebration. Watching from the press box at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, the fourth game of the 1992 American League Championship Series seemed to be proceeding according to script — a very familiar script for the visiting Toronto Blue Jays.

Alomar played for Toronto from 1991 to '95 after being traded from the San Diego Padres in a four-player deal for Joe Carter after the '90 season. In 2010, Alomar's first year of Hall of Fame eligibility, he missed induction by eight votes. His 73.7% of the vote was the highest percentage of votes in any player's first year on the ballot without being elected. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in his second year of eligibility, with 90% of the vote . On July 24, 2011, Alomar was inducted into the Hall of Fame, becoming the first inductee to be depicted as a Blue Jays player on his plaque. The Jays’ players were enraged, but the only way they were going to shut him up was to beat him, which was no small order.
